America is Sodom?!?!

God sends two angels in Sodom in chapter 19. They are seen by Lot as they walk into the gate and they are invited to his house to spend the night and then leave in the morning. The angels refused in verse 3 saying that they would abide in the streets all night, but Lot would hear nothing of the sort and he bothered them so much that they finally gave in and agreed to spend the night at Lot’s house.

But why was Lot so intent on meeting the angels at the door and immediately ushering them into his home, closing the door, and keeping them there all night until the morning when he would send them on their way? How could these angels possibly find 10 righteous people if they spent the whole night locked up in Lot’s house Well, before they could all tuck themselves into bed for the night, they found out. Let’s read the Biblical account at this point:

Genesis 19:4But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Let’s make this a little clearer, let’s look at another version (The Amplified) of this:

Genesis 19:4 But before they lay down, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, all the men from every quarter, surrounded the house.
5 And they called to Lot and said, Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know (be intimate with) them.

The men of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded Lot’s house and demanded he send out the visitors so that they may be intimate with them. Let us be clear, this wasn’t a few men, the implication is that it was all of the men of Sodom, who came out and wanted to be intimate with the visitors. The visitors had NO CHOICE in the matter. This was not sex in any form, this was rape. These men, numbering in the hundreds or possibly even thousands, had come to Lot’s house to rape the angels.

Lot, naturally, acted as any righteous, upstanding man would. He barricaded the doors extra and started planning a defen… Oh wait, no he didn’t. Lot went outside and addressed the crowd and in verse 7 Lot shows the kind of man he was, and it isn’t righteous.

Genesis 19:7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.|
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

That’s right, he says to the men “don’t behave wickedly and rape these men visiting me, no, instead you can take my daughters and do it to them instead!”

So let’s be clear here. God did not send these angels into Sodom because Lot was righteous in any way, shape, or form. Lot was just as vile, sinful, and evil as the people of Sodom. God sent the angels into Sodom to save Lot because Abraham only negotiated with God for the lives of those in Sodom for the sake of Lot. God attempted to save Lot, Lot’s wife, and his daughters because of Abraham’s righteousness, not Lots.

Let’s get back to our story. The men refused, they didn’t want Lot’s virgin daughters, they wanted the visitors. And this is where people claim the sin was homosexuality. But let me be clear here, these men were not requesting the ability to flirt with the visitors. They were demanding the right to do as they will with the visitors, no matter what their own personal thoughts on what they wanted to do were. This was rape. This was rape by an entire city on any male visitor who walked in the gates. Lot wanted the angels off the streets because he was hoping that the men of Sodom wouldn’t notice that there were visitors, so they wouldn’t arrive and demand what was, as far as they were concerned, their right.

The angels smote the men with blindness and confusion, and turned to Lot and told him to get his family and everyone he cared for out of the city for it would be destroyed. But only his wife and two daughters would come. But let’s look again at the explanation the angels gave for the destruction of Sodom:

Genesis 19:12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.

So my question is this: who exactly is crying out against Sodom? Well, let’s analyze.

Two male visitors come to town, and the whole town shows up to forcibly be “intimate” with them. Do you think Lot went through this treatment when he moved it? Do you think other visitors have? Do you think they had more victims than just these two angels? Or are we assuming this is the first time that this ever happened?

The cries against Sodom were coming from the victims of the violence of Sodom. The cries came from those forcibly taken by the mobs of Sodom. And God heard their cries and cast judgment upon the wickedness.

But let’s dig a little deeper. Let’s think of the greatest atrocities that mankind has ever committed. Auschwitz, the Inquisition, ethnic cleansings, civil wars, atomic bombs, anything you can possibly imagine. Sodom was worse. It was worse. It was so much worse that god Himself had to cleanse the world of the land that Sodom and Gomorrah stood on. The land is still uninhabitable thousands of years later. God razed the ground for forever because the sin committed on it was so evil.

So let’s bring this forward and answer the question at hand “Is America the modern Sodom?” And I just don’t see how the answer can be anything but “no”. We aren’t even close.

Are we a sinful nation? Yes. But the Bible tells us that if we are even friends with the world, we are enemies of God (James 4:4). If that is true, how can we possibly think that the world, every single part of the world, is not the enemy of God?

I understand that we want better, that we see America as our homeland. That we want to do everything we can to make our country to be one nation under God. But there is a major Scriptural issue with that line of thought. Let’s take a look at Philippians 3:20 in the Amplified Bible:

Philippians 3:20 – But we are citizens of the state (commonwealth, homeland) which is in heaven, and from it also we earnestly and patiently await [the coming of] the Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [as] Savior,

Christians have a citizenship to a nation, that nation is in heaven. God doesn’t want us to have dual citizenship. Now, don’t go and toss out your American citizenship (or whatever country you live in), that isn’t what this is saying. What it is saying is our first focus, our homeland, is Heaven. The unified nation of the Christian is Heaven. Any attempt to create a worldly nation under God will fail, because ultimately the Bible tells us that we already have a nation. Why would we need two if God is the ruler of each?

So of course America is sinful, its comprised entirely of sinful men. That is what men do. Men reject God. So instead of mourning the loss of the supposed “Christian majority”, let us remember these words of Jesus:

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Let us remember that the “Christian majority” or the “moral majority” or anything else you want to call it never truly existed. It was a lie that we believed that caused us to lose focus, to lose our urgency to reach the lost. Why? Because we kept speaking that the majority of the people we knew were saved!!

But before we are through, let’s go back to one of the tweets from before.

I have a direct response to this line of thought. With all due respect to Billy Graham, let me present a list of nations that God would owe America an apology because of if He destroyed America because of gay marriage. Nations that have granted rights to same sex marriage: The Netherlands (2001), Belgium (2003), Spain (2005), Canada (2005), South Africa (2006), Norway (2009), Sweden (2009), Portugal (2010), Iceland (2010), Argentina (2010), Denmark (2012), Brazil (2013), France (2013), Uruguay (2013), New Zealand (2013), the United Kingdom (2014), and Luxemburg (2015). In addition, Finland, Slovenia, and Ireland have passed legislation to legalize gay marriage but have not set the official date it goes into motion yet. Not only that, but the Nation of Israel officially recognizes gay marriage, but since it doesn’t perform government-sanctioned marriages it does not perform the ceremonies. However, same sex couples have nearly all the same rights as heterosexual couples under “unregistered cohabitation status” which is similar to common law marriages in America.

Simply put, if America legalizing same sex marriages is the tipping point that guarantees the destruction of America then we’d have already seen fire reign down from heaven on over a dozen other countries. That has not happened.

Which brings us to the end of this blog post where we ask ourselves, why do we care? What is the point of this? To answer that, let’s recap:

First of all, homosexuality is absolutely, 100% a sin. The Bible forbids any and all sexual activity outside of the marriage bed. Period. The Bible also defines the marriage bed as exclusively between one man and one woman (even if the man has multiple wives, they are separate marriages, the women are not married to each other). Pornography, unmarried heterosexual sex, masturbation, or anything else you could possibly imagine. It is all forbidden. Unless two people are married (and of opposite genders) there is no sexual activity they could participate in that is not sinful.

Second, let me be as clear as I can be: legalizing same sex marriage is moving a step away from God. Whether or not a nation can be “Christian”, America was founded, at least for the most part, on Christian principles. This, however, is the exact opposite of that. This is contrary to Christian principles, to the principles of God.

Which brings us to the ultimate question: what do we do?

Simple. We pray. We fast. We seek God’s face like we never have before. And, finally, we love everyone. Unconditionally. That does not mean we tell them that their sin is ok because they love each other, but it also does not mean we belittle, demean, or make fun of anyone. In everything you do, remember to do unto everyone you come across only in the same exact way you would want them to act to you.

Our God is love. #lovewins
